CANCER IN UTAH

The Utah Cancer Registry publishes a biennial about cancer trends in the state. This report is available to the public and professionals in the medical and public health systems.

Accurate cancer statistics are essential for understanding the impact of cancer across Utah and for guiding efforts in prevention, screening, and treatment. The Utah Cancer Registry collects data on all reportable cancer diagnoses and cancer-related deaths statewide, providing a clear picture of cancer incidence and mortality.

As a population-based registry operating under the authority of the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, Utah Cancer Registry ensures that cancer data are consistently reported and managed according to Utah law. These statistics help identify trends in the most common cancer types, support research, and inform public health strategies to reduce the burden of cancer in Utah.

UTAH vs U.S.

Common cancers diagnosed 2017-2021

Utah’s overall cancer incidence and mortality rates were statistically significantly lower than the rest of the U.S.

The incidence of prostate cancer and melanoma were statistically significantly higher in Utah than the rest of the U.S. from 2017-2021.

Utah has historically had much lower smoking rates than other states, resulting in fewer smoking- related cancers and cancer deaths. Utah’s lung cancer incidence and mortality rates for 2017-2021 were approximately half those of the remaining U.S. However, smoking rates have been declining nationwide, and over time, nationwide lung cancer incidence and mortality may become more similar to what is observed in Utah.
